Judy Sunderland attended the Installation and assisted with the installations of Funck, the other officers and the Board.

Pancake Festival 2005 Successful

March 19 the Kiwanis Club of Naperville--Evening held its 50th annual Pancake Day/Festival.  The event was quite successful with about 3,000 satisfied Pancake eaters--and the club with record receipts.  Following the Festival committee persons met to recap the activities of this year and plan for the future.  In recent years, the activity has grown from being called a Pancake Day to a Pancake Festival.  The Festival included musical presentations by local youth bands, games for children, and a raffle with a wide variety of merchandise prizes.  Members began selling tickets for the breakfast ($4 in advance, $5 at the door) in January.  The club depends on all members to participate as much as they can.

Bells Ringing Again for Salvation Army

After a hiatus of a couple years, members of the Evening Kiwanis Club are again ringing the Salvation Army bells again this year.  As they have done in the past, club members will ring bells on one week-end during November and a second week-end in December to assist the Salvation Army in their fundraising efforts.  Kiwanis bell ringers can be found at  3 Jewel stores (Market Meadows, Ogden and Washington, and across from the Post Office on Ogden), 2 Dominick's (Fox Run and on North Aurora Road), and Casey's Finer Foods.

New Officers take over October 1

At a festive Installation Dinner and Celebration held at Long Island Sound, Jim O'Donnell was installed as Club President to lead the club through it's 50th year. Also installed along with O'Donnell were President-Elect Don Cervenka, Secretary Louise Jacobs, Treasurer Maurice Core, and Assistant Treasurer Millie Mika.

Marilynn Cervenka, Marlene Keegan, Floyd Mallory and Gale Pewitt will join Bill Aimonette, Jack Gillespie, Carlton Piepho and Hank Verboomen as members of the Board for the 2004-2005 term

We were honored to have I-I District Governor John Hall along with his wife Skyla and their son Kyle as our guests for the dinner.

Hall took advantage of the opportunity to install Pat Cork as Lt. Gov. for Division 21 in the presence of hewr home club before Cork installed the new officers and Board Members.

Club Honored as Distinguished for 2002-2003

The Naperville Evening Club was recognized as a Distinguished Club in the I-I District for the 2002-2003 Administrative year.  Along with the club's recognition, 2002-2003 President John Bergesen was honored as a "Distinguished President" and Louise Jacobs was presented with a "Distinguished Secretary" pin.

The club received a banner patch in recognition of the Distinguished Club distinction.

The only other Division 21 club to be honored as Distinguished for the 2002-2003 year was the Aurora Golden K club.

Peanut Day 2004 Successful

Peanut Day is one of the two major fundraisers that the club uses to obtain the money that is used for charitable purposes throughout the year.  This year, the Peanut Day fundraiser was conducted during the Naperville Art Fair (September 18 and 19) and on the tradition 4th Friday and Saturday of September (September 24 and 25).  This year, we were fortunate to be able to collect at 10 stores, and we had weather that cooperated with our effort.

The goal this year was to raise $9,000 and it appears that we have exceeded that goal by more than $1,000.

Peanut committee chairs were Gordon Ferguson, Bob Smith, Marsh Cornell and Pat Cork.

Club Again to Partner with Salvation Army and Ring Bells

After a 2 year hiatus, club members will again be ringing the bells for the Salvation Army during November and December.  The club originally agreed to ring the balls with an agreement that a beneficiary of our ringing would be the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry.  This agreement was not being honored by the Salvation Army due to some changes in their administration--but once again, in 2004, with a new agreement in place, members look forward to ringing the bells on November 19 and 20 and again on December 17 and 18.

Members Honored--Legion of Honor and Kiwanian of the Year

On Monday, April 26, in place of an outside speaker or program, the club honored some its members for service.  Jack Parker and Dick Smith were awarded Legion of Honor Recognition for 30 years membership in the Club.  Dick James was honored for 25 years of membership.

On that same evening, John Bergesen, current chairman of the KIP (Kiwanis Involvement Points) Program reviewed the calendar year 2003 and the accomplishments of the club as a whole and individual members during that 12-month period.  As was stated in our weekly bulletin:  "It’s a night for us to be very proud, or a night that we remind ourselves that we need to be getting back into the flow.  Our total man-hours dropped from last year which was a little down from the year before.  I thought I noticed our man-hour contributions running in three year cycles.  We’d have a down year and then the next two would be much better.  Goals we met pretty well.  One of the amazing things to me was that there were 77 Kiwanians who made their 1,000 KIP.Pat Cork was named Kiwanian of the Year for 2003.  New Kiwanian of the Year Honors were shared by two new Members:  Jim Rose and Walt Kelly.  Congratulations to all.

Pancake Festival Held March 13

Maintaining a tradition that is as old as the club, the 49th annual Pancake Festival (formerly called Pancake Day) was held on March 13, 2004.  Festival Co-Chairmen John Kroening and George Wilson, along with the various task supervisors, led the club to another successful year.

Because the activity involves so much more than "just pancakes," the name Pancake FESTIVAL was adopted.  Everyone who has attended the activity throughout the years will agree that it has grown to become a real community event--with clowns, face painting, games for children, and entertainment furnished by area bands.  A raffle featuring thousands of dollars worth of merchandise prizes has also become an integral part of the festivities during the past 4 years.

The event was held at Naperville Central High School.  Meal Tickets were available from any club member in advance for $4.  Tickets at the door sold for $5.

Raffle tickets were also available from any club member in advance or at the event.  Raffle tickets sold for $1 each or 6 for $5.  37 prize packages (consisting of merchandise and gift certificates) valued at $75 or more, helped the club raise about $6500 to be added to the other Pancake Festival profits.

Club Co-Sponsors and Charters Bolingbrook Club

Our club was invited to co-sponsor a new club in Bolingbrook by the Romeoville Club.  Eight of our members spent about 88 hours participating in a 3-day campaign to contact and recruit potential members throughout the Bolingbrook community.

Working hand-in-hand with International Trustee Don Canaday, Kiwanis Club Development Specialist Earl Forbes, I-I Gov. Larry Spone, Division 23 Lt. Gov. Jerry Jurina, and Romeoville Club President Cliff Canaday, our members were active participants in recruiting the 30+ charter members of the new club.

This is an activity that our club has not actively participated in during the past several years, so all those who participated enjoyed the experience or recruiting right through the Charter Night Celebration held on Wednesday, February 18 at the Bolingbrook Holiday Inn.  The Bolingbrook Club is the FIRST NEW CLUB for the I-I District this administrative year.

Club Mourns Loss of Key Member

The meeting room was filling and an air of excitement was in the air--special guests of the club would be in attendance to receive donations that had been previously approved.  As meeting time drew closer and closer, it was apparent that a key player who had been very instrumental in setting up this special event was not yet here.  The meeting was started and continued flawlessly through the program as it had been orchestrated.  It was only after the meeting had concluded that members were informed of the sad news that member Tom Robillard had died very unexpectedly at his home while he readied himself for the February 16 meeting.

Tom was involved in virtually every aspect of the Club's activities and he will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Donations Night -- A First for Club

On February 16, 2004, the Club held its first Donations Night program.  Although the Club annually donates approximately $30,000 to various community agencies, it has traditionally been done simply by issuing a check once the expenditure was approved by the Donations Committee and the Board of Directors.  This year, the agencies were invited to send a representative to formally accept the check at one of our meetings.

$14,000 was distributed that evening.  Recipients were the Naperville Humane Society, Wayside Cross Missionaries, Naperville Heritage Society, Special Olympics, Naperville Cares and Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry.

New Member Goal on Target

Each club in the I-I Kiwanis District has been challenged to add a new member each month.  Since October, the Evening Kiwanis has been on track for achieving that goal.  With two or three new members in various stages of recruitment in late February, the club remains on track to achieve that District Goal.

Next Lt. Gov. for Div. 21 from our Club

It has been announced that Pat Cork of the Evening Club will serve Division 21 at Lt. Gov. for the 2004-2005 administrative year.  The announcement was made at the Charter Night Celebration for the newly-formed Bolingbrook Club by current Lt. Gov. Mark Brent of the Aurora Noon Club.

Christmas Party/Dinner Held December 9

The annual Christmas Dinner/Party was held again this year at the Naperville Country Club on Tuesday, December 9.  120 attended including I-I District Governor Larry Spone and his wife Bonnie.  Other guests included spouses of members and the widows of two former members:  Dorothy Toothill and Shirley Davidson.

Entertainment for the evening was provided by a Jazz Ensemble from Waubonsie Valley High School.

Toy Collection Benefits Area Needy

About 80 club members donated toys, clothing and gift certificates that will be donated to Lisle Township and the Family Shelter Services for distribution to needy families.  The majority of the donations were collected at the regular meeting on Monday, December 1.

Millie Mika served as chairperson for the event this year.

Baby Showers Benefit Birthright of DuPage

A project that was begun during the 2001-2002 administrative year to assist our club with fulfilling its Young Children:  Priority One goal consisted of sponsoring baby showers throughout the year to benefit Birthright of DuPage.  Members are asked to bring and donate items for newborns.  Since their inception, showers have been held four times a year:  October, January, April, and July.

Duane Stone Joins Legion of Honor

Recognizing 25 years of membership in Kiwanis, Duane Stone was honored and presented with a pin and certificate on December 1.

Installation Dinner Held October 6

Incoming 2003-2004 Club Officers and Board Members were officially installed on Monday, October 6 during a banquet at Long Island Sound in Aurora.  Installing officer was Division 21 Lt. Gov. Mark Brent of the Aurora Noon Club.  The club was honored to have I-I District Gov. Larry Spone and First Lady Bonnie in attendance at the event.

Officers  installed were: President Wayne Thomas, President-Elect Jim O'Donnell, Secretary Louise Jacobs, Treasurer Phil Kanning, and Assistant Treasurer Maurice Core.

Club Wins Elliott Bell

The Annual Report of Club Activities filed with the I-I District at the conclusion of the 2001-2002 administrative year has resulted in the club's winning the Elliott Bell--an award that has been circulated within the District since 1922.  In the past 10 years, Division 21 Clubs have won the award 5 times; Plainfield is a 3-time winner while Aurora Noon and Aurora Golden K have each won once.

The award is based on a report outlining 5 service projects that the club undertook during that year.  The five projects selected were:  Baby Showers for Birthright of DuPage (a YCPO project), wood-cutting at the DuPage Childrens Museum, construction of a playhouse to benefit Little Friends, driving the employee bus at Edward Hospital, and "Meals on Wheels" at Martin Avenue Apartments.

Projects had to be described on the basis of need within the community, a plan of action by the club, and and evaluation of the project.

Trauma (Hospital) Dolls new YCPO Project

A sewing group has been organized among members to make and supply Hospital Dolls to the Pediatric Emergency Room at Edward Hospital.

The dolls are made following the pattern and instructions furnished by former Kiwanis First Lady Miki Cunant.

The group presented the first 3 dozen dolls to the Edward Pediatrics ER Department in April, and a second 3 dozen were presented in August.  Beginning with the August donation, the dolls will be dressed in "hospital gowns" and be presented to patients along with the rhyme:

I'm YOUR Kiwanis Hospital Doll,

I can help kids both big and small.

I'll be your friend and stay close to you

Let's pretend that what's wrong with you, is wrong with me too.

Explain to the doctor where it hurts you--

Is it an ache, or a pain, or just a boo-boo?

While you're at Edward Emergency

You can have fun marking on me.

Give me a mouth, a nose, and some eyes,

Make them like yours--make me look nice.

And before we go home you'll make me happy,

If you let your doctor and nurses autograph me.

.As of the beginning of October, another 50 dolls were donated to Edward (25 to Peds and 25 to Peds ER).  And 50 dolls were dressed in T-Shirts and shipped to be used at a clinic in Nogales, Mexico.

Pentecost Joins Legion of Honor

President John Bergesen presented a framed certificate and pin recognizing Legion of Honor status for Van Pentecost, making him the 21st member of our club who has achieved Legion of Honor status.  Van has been a member of the Club for 25 years.

OLD "NEWS"

First Baby Shower for Birthright in October

A project that was begun during the 2001-2002 administrative year to assist our club with fulfilling its Young Children:  Priority One goal consisted of sponsoring baby showers throughout the year to benefit Birthright of DuPage.  Members are asked to bring and donate items for newborns.  The first shower of the 2003-2004 administrative year will be held on October 20.  Succeeding showers will be held in January, April, and July -- on the third Monday of each of those months. Members are asked to donate disposable diapers, wipes, and other baby items that are needed.

John Janke First New Member of 2003-2004

John Janke is scheduled to be inducted into the club as its first new member of the 2003-2004 administrative year.  John is sponsored by Gale Pewitt.  The formal induction will be held October 20.

Paddlewheel Boat Lunch Held

The date was Saturday, September 13, beginning at 12 Noon for a fried chicken meal and cruise on the Fox River (launching from Pottawatomie Park in St. Charles ).  The cost of $20 per person included a 2-hour cruise, all-you-can-eat Southern pan-fried chicken dinner (chicken, potato salad, baked beans, cole slaw, rolls & butter, pickles & olives, cake & ice cream, coffee, lemonade & iced tea), and the gratuity.  There was an organist on board although members did not get into the action of dancing or singing.  About 50 participated.

Peanut Days Winds Down

Due to some conflicts, our Club was not able to schedule its Peanut Days collection on only one weekend again this year.  The club is looking at having Peanut Days scheduled over about a month--Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays--outside of area Jewel and Dominick's stores, at the Naperville train stations, and at the Naperville Fine Arts Fair.   Project Chairman Steve Robillard expressed hopes that this year's campaign would result in profits that equal or exceed what we have done in the past.

Peanut Days is one of the major fundraisers for our Club and provides the Club with some of the monetary resources necessary for us to carry out many of our projects and make contributions to causes through our Donations Committee.

The final collection of the season will be held during the weekend of October 17 & 18.

48th Annual "Old-Fashioned" Pancake Day Held March 22

Saturday, March 22, was the date for the 48th Annual "Old Fashioned" Pancake Day.  As it has been for the past several years, the event was held at Naperville Central High School between 6 AM and 1 PM.

Pancake Day is one of the few activities that Club members participate in that directly raise funds for Club use and disbursement to qualifying local charities throughout the next 12 months.

Pancake Day has become more than just eating a plateful of pancakes and sausages and then going home.  Throughout its history, Pancake Day has become a real opportunity for diners to visit with friends and neighbors while they are entertained with musical programs performed by local junior high school musicians.  This year, all the Naperville junior high bands participated; a German Band that has become a crowd favorite also participated.  A special area for kids to play games, color, and have their faces painted is popular with young patrons.  Balloons are distributed for kids to take home as souvenirs.  Clowns and magicians greet and entertain the old and young alike.

And another raffle was held at this year's event.  Begun in 2001, the raffle has offered prizes appealing to all ages.  2003 showcased another fabulous array of 35 "prize packages" including golf packages, a 27" color TV, $300 in travel vouchers on Southwest Airlines, and numerous dining opportunities as well as assorted merchandise.  Raffle tickets sold for $1 each or 6 for $5.

Preliminarily, it appears that the 2003 Pancake receipts are lower than the records that the club set in 2002.  A complete financial breakdown will be presented to the Club in April.

Pat Cork/Tom Tarpey Honored as Kiwanians of the Year for 2002

On Monday March 17, KIP Chairman Jim O'Donnell presented the annual KIP participation and recognition program.  After presenting a summary of the Club's activities throughout 2002--and comparing those numbers with past years, O'Donnell and Tom Robillard presented the NEW KIWANIAN OF THE YEAR award to Tom Tarpey who amassed a record number of Kiwanis "points."   For the first time since the Club began the program of recognizing a KIWANIAN OF THE YEAR, the recognition went to a woman--Pat Cork.

I-I Governor's Visit to Club/Division halted by pneumonia

2002-2003 Illinois-Eastern Iowa Governor Mary Manning was scheduled to visit the Club and Division 21 on Monday, February 24, 2003.  The visit was scheduled to be held during one of the Club's regular meetings, and serve as the Governor's official visit to Division 21.  All Division 21 Clubs were be invited to send representatives to the meeting, and four clubs took advantage of the opportunity to send delegations of 4 or more, thereby qualifying as an interclub visit.

Unfortunately, Mary was suffering from pneumonia that day and was forced to cancel her visit at the last minute.  (Anyone attending the Collinsville convention the week before realizes that Mary was suffering from the early signs of a cold/pneumonia at that time.)  Fortunately for the 100+ members and guests in attendance, Lt. Gov. Bill Novotny was able to arrange for Gov. Elect Larry Spone to come to the meeting.

Larry spoke briefly but impressed those attending with his personal enthusiasm and participation in the Kiwanis organization.  Among those in attendance was Mark Brent of the Aurora Noon Club; Mark will serve as Lt. Gov. for Division 21 during the 2003-2004 Administrative year.  Also, Key Club Lt. Gov. Chad Kitches was ibn attendance.  Chad has announced his candidacy for 2003-2004 I-I District Key Club Governor.  We wish him success at the upcoming Key Club Convention in Arlington Heights.

DuPage Children's Museum Recognizes Evening Kiwanis

In their March-April 2003 Newsletter, DuPage Children's Museum and Executive Director Sue Broad recognized the long and unique collaboration that has existed between the Museum and the Evening Kiwanis Club.  Their article states that Club members have "collected donated lumber and cut it up...they also repair exhibits, deliver flyers and help with school programs and events.  Over the years, the Kiwanis have donated thousands of volunteer hours and over $25,000 to support DCM."  Sue Broad added, "I have never witnessed such constant, loyal support over time by any group.  It is unparalleled in my years of experience working with non-profits."

Five Awarded Hixson Honors in 2002

In the Spring of 2002, a special committee was appointed by then-president Edie Gold to research and make recommendations for Hixson Fellowships.  The Naperville Evening Club has established a tradition of purchasing the Fellowships and presenting them to members in recognition of special contributions on the part of the individual members.  Three awards were made -- to Jack Gillespie, Joseph Honn, and Frank Pollack.

At the installation ceremony on October 7, two more members were honored by the Club for their contribution to the Evening Kiwanis.  Jim O'Donnell and Pat Cork (the first woman to be honored by the Club) received Hixson Fellowships--bringing to 21 the total number in the club with the Hixsons.

Other Hixson Fellows are Bill Abe, Nathan Bartell, John Bergesen Pete Cooper, Gordon Ferguson, Gerry Garren, Richard Kilburn, Dick Konigsfeld, Larry Lyons, Fay McDonald (deceased 2001), Jack Powell, Charles Price, Thomas Robillard, C. Weston Spencer (deceased January 2001), Wayne Thomas, and Charlie Weston (deceased 2001).

New Member Orientation for Five

On Saturday, November 16, John Bergesen led a group that conducted a "New Member Orientation" session for five members who have joined the club during the past year.  A few other "seasoned" members of the Club were on hand to assist John as needed.

The program started with breakfast at a local restaurant, followed by a 3-hour session at a nearby church hall.  The informal gathering provided a great atmosphere for a back-and-forth dialogue and the dissemination of information about the workings and structure of the Club and the Kiwanis organization.

2002-2003 Directories Published and Distributed

2002-2003 Directories of Club Members will be distributed to the members on Monday, November 18.  Some delays with the printing procedures caused the booklets to be slightly later than normal getting distributed.  Club members who attended the New Member Orientation on Saturday, Nov. 16, received their booklets at that time.  Members not in attendance on November 18 will have their booklets mailed to them.

Club Rings Bells for Salvation Army

Club members continued a tradition that we have had for several by volunteering to ring the bells for the Salvation Army holiday collections.  The Club provided "ringers" at four Naperville grocery stores on Friday and Saturday, November 22 and 23, and again on Friday and Saturday, December 13 and 14.

Christmas Party Includes Giving

The Club's annual Christmas Dinner was held in its traditional location--the Naperville Country Club.  The dinner was attended by 130 members, spouses, guests, and widows of former members.  In addition to the actual dinner party, Club members also were asked to donate appropriate gifts that were subsequently distributed to the needy through the offices of Lisle Township and Family Shelter Services.  Millie Mika served as chairperson for both the gift collection and disbursement, and the dinner party.

Kids ID Program-- A YCPO Activity

On Saturday, January 11, Kiwanians from the Naperville Evening Club were on hand to assist with the Child ID Program scheduled at local Jewel Stores.  This is a new program in the Chicagoland area, and Club members are anxious to get more Young Children: Priority One projects among their portfolio of Club activities.

President John Bergesen served as the liaison to get the necessary information and materials for Club members.

In retrospect, those Kiwanians who participated determined that the activity was a good and viable service, but that the corporate sponsors need to do more promotion prior to and during the event to make it more effective.  Minimal signage and poor set-up locations did not promote the impact that an event of this type could produce.
